Run The Flood, 2009, Raises $50,000 for Cedar Rapids, IA, Flood Recovery

Kathleen Pegg and Kari Lammer, organizers of Run the Flood, present proceeds from their race through Cedar Rapids on June 13, 2009, to remember the catastrophic flood on June 13, 2008, and to help raise money for the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for Flood Recovery.

What started as a dream for Lammer in a discussion with Pegg, to run the perimeter of the 2008 flood, blossomed into a full-fledged 7-mile run and a 2.5-mile walk to raise money for the flood recovery. They originally anticipated 200-300 runners for the event, which quickly grew to 500, and to their amazement became 1100 by June 3. They suddenly began to panic as they realized that they would need more food, water, supplies, and most of all.... volunteers. The alert went out and volunteers responded.

By the day of the event, more than 2,000 runners were registered and the result was a phenomenal gift of $50,000 to the flood recovery fund.

The writer responded to the call for volunteers and is shown here in a picture with Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack, who was invited to speak and was also here as a registered runner.

Nice socks!

It was a cool and rainy morning, a grim reminder of the flood that occurred one year prior, on June 13, 2008. Fortunately the weather began to clear just as the race began.

Anticipation.... let the
race begin!

......and they're off!!
Meanwhile, back at Green Square Park, volunteers were busily setting up the refreshments for the race partipants.

The efforts of these two young ladies show beyond doubt the amazing things that can be
accomplished when they put their heads together to team up to help those who were so
traumatically affected by the great flood of 2008.

Thank you, Kari and Kathleen, for all of your hard work and efforts.... and most of all...
